I have driven by this spot many times, but recently I stopped to take a closer look at this misaligned section of track hoping to find a clue to the reason for the misalignment. No luck in this, instead, I … Continue reading

EVERY PERSON IS ENTITLED TO A FEW BAD DAYS AT WORK AND THE CAR’S PAINTER HAS ONE LESS IN HIS QUOTA. ONE DOES WONDER HOW THIS WAS RELEASED FROM THE PAINT SHOP THOUGH.
This photo has a little bit of history attached to it. The Santa Fe Railroad Historical & Modeling Society, Western Archive, donated materials related to the Union Pacific Railroad to the Union Pacific Historical Society and these materials came into my hands as I am a member of the UPHS archive Committee. I found this print and the negative as I went through the box. I scanned the print with the idea of sharing it in this Blog and giving the photographer due credit for the photo. On the back of the print is written “by Wm B Garner” and the print is dated Jan. 1963. If anyone has knowledge of Mr. Garner, and is willing share same with the UPHS, please include in a comment to this Post. Also, if any UPRR painters are out there, please give us some insight how this error might have occurred.
THE TITLE BEGS THE QUESTION: WHAT ARE THE PARTS THE STEAM LOCOMOTIVE IS GREATER THEN THE SUM OF?
ON A RECENT FRIDAY MORNING, THE MUSEUM’S ACTIVE STEAM LOCOMOTIVE, THE VC-2, WAS BEING PREPARED FOR THE WEEKEND PASSENGER TRAINS TO PERRIS. THE OLD MACHINIST WAS PLAYING HOOKY FROM THE MACHINE SHOP TO INDULGE HIMSELF IN PHOTOGRAPHY AND OBSERVED SMOKE RISING ABOVE BARN FOUR. TWO THINGS CAME TO MIND. SMOKE MEANS FIRE AND EITHER BARN FOUR WAS ABLAZE OR THE VC-2 WAS STEAMING UP. EITHER WAY, THE PHOTOGRAPHIC OPPORTUNITIES WOULD BE GREAT. IT TURNED OUT THE VC-2 CREW HAD JUST BEGUN THE LONG PROCESS OF RAISING STEAM. SLOWLY, THUS MINIMIZING THE THERMAL GRADIENT STRESS ON THE BOILER. THE PHOTOGRAPHS INCLUDED HEREIN ARE THE PRODUCT OF THE MODEST PHOTOGRAPHY SKILLS OF THE OLD MACHINIST AND HIS SINCERE DESIRE TO DO AS LITTLE REAL WORK AS POSSIBLE.
