SOMEHOW THIS DOES NOT LOOK RIGHT

I have driven by this spot many times, but recently I stopped to take a closer look at this misaligned section of track hoping to find a clue to the reason for the misalignment. No luck in this, instead, I discovered some split rails had been repaired by welding. I have looked at a lot of rail in my eighty one years and I never have seen such a repair as this. I feel certain rail repairs such as this is not allowed today and most likely not back then either. I did find the rail was rolled in 1909 by Colorado fuel and Iron (CF&I).

About THE OLD MACHINIST

I am 87 years old and married for 65 years. My wife passed away in 2016. I am a retired engineer and spent 35 years developing INS gyroscopes. I was a High School mentor in physics, a mountaineer, a model builder, a machinist and I have a degree in Physics. My interests include railroad history and photography, science history, cosmology, interesting people, and old engineering drawings. I place a high value on my friendships. I enjoyed my life and I am trying to look forward with a sense of anticipation and curiosity.
